3 to 6 Zine Workshop (creative expression of Trans & Autistic identity)

16th February 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

In a 2020 study, it was found that transgender or gender diverse people were 3 to 6 times more likely to be autistic than cisgender people. This workshop aims to offer a space for autistic trans people to meet each other, and work together to create a zine that explores how being autistic can interact with the way we experience gender.

Participants are invited to creatively express themselves how they wish, through writing, drawing, collage, photography, or a mixture. Optional prompts will be provided that participants can respond to, and for a 45 minute period of the workshop there will be further verbal suggestions offered. Discussion is encouraged, but no one is expected to speak if they do not feel comfortable doing so.

Materials Provided: Paper, pens, collage materials (patterned paper, magazines, etc), scissors, glue, and a digital camera. Although hand sanitiser and anti-viral spray will be provided, materials may potentially be shared.

Participants are welcome to bring their own materials if they have anything they would prefer to use. In particular, participants who are likely to want to use collage are encouraged to bring spare materials.

Images will be collected at the end of the workshop (unless a participant does not wish for their work to be collected), and will be printed in a zine. Participants will receive a free copy of the zine regardless of whether or not their work is printed. The zine can either be posted to participants, or it will be available for collection from Partisan.

Workshop Schedule

7pm: Introduction – A quick intro to thank participants, explain house rules and have everyone introduce themselves with their name and pronouns (if comfortable)

The options available in terms of prompts, methods participants could use to draw or be otherwise creative, as well as how images can be collected at the end will also be discussed.

7:15pm – 8pm: Open creative space, during this time, the facilitator will be available if anyone wants help in either “room” and occasionally will ask questions or make open suggestions – there is no expectation for these to be answered, however, but discussion is encouraged. A separate space will be provided if anyone needs a quiet, lower light room which will have a device available to contact the facilitator if non-verbal communication is preferred.

8pm – 8:15pm: Time to finish off whatever people are working on, during this time the facilitator will remain quiet unless someone has a question.

8:15pm – 8:30pm: Finishing up, collecting the images/writing/etc from participants, and explaining how the zine will be distributed.

This event is free and will be held in-person at Partisan, follow this link for info on access and how to find us.
