TIM LAWRENCE [LOVE SAVES THE DAY / BEAUTY & THE BEAT]
It is phenomenally rare that a writer – and professor! – documenting an historical movement can themselves come to acquire legendary status within that movement – but Tim is the exception. His first book, ‘Love Saves The Day’, based around his close friend Dave Mancuso’s foundational, iconic rent parties in the Loft, is *the* textbook on the sacred origins of modern dance music culture. His later additions on this topic, ‘Hold On To Your Dreams’ (centred on the unsung hero of disco, Arthur Russell), and ‘Life and Death on the New York Dancefloor’ (about how the ferociously creative and diverse scene was affected by neoliberal gentrification and the horrific spread of AIDS) are both beautiful and essential reads. Tim worked alongside Mancuso as well as Colleen Murphy, Jeremy Gilbert and a team of dance enthusiasts to establish Lucky Cloud – ‘the London Loft’ – an incredibly popular community party that has raged for over 15 years. Tim has also been central to the creation of All Our Friends party, which he co-founded with the organisers of Beauty and the Beat, two parties which will be more than familiar to London disco lovers. Tim is an advocate of community partying and has taken major inspiration from David Mancuso and the Loft. Following the establishment of All Our Friends, he is now selecting music on a regular basis and exploring what kinds of sonic journeys are possible as dancers seek to reclaim the dance floor as a space of social congreation and transformation. We are so lucky to have him shine that light so brightly for us at day party #6. Check out his NTS special with Partisan member Isaac – playing Loft classics, new jams, and talking about the future of the scene https://www.nts.live/shows/guests/episodes/music-is-love-w-isaac-rose-and-tim-lawrence-24th-november-2018
SOFIE K [NTS]
Compared by many a Manchester music head to Paradise Garage legend Larry Levan, Sofie K is as inspired with cosmic daytime selections as she is with tightly mixed late night bangers. After giving the Partisan dancefloor what was most likely one of the best NYE midnight DJ sets in the country, we knew we simply had to get her back for the day party disco. Catch her weird and groovy blends of electro, disco and house on her latest NTS radio show here https://www.nts.live/shows/sofie-k/episodes/sofie-k-6th-janurary-2019
IRFAN RAINY [RAINY CITY MUSIC / COMMUNITY]
Irfan is a legend of the Manchester dance music scene. At the heart of the very special house-oriented Rainy City Music label, Irfan has pushed house grooves from wet Manchester that have been revered by some the biggest DJs in Detroit, Chicago and New York. An aficionado in music from all around the world, Irfan was central in pushing the London based UK broken beat sound – inspired by Latin and West African rhythms, as well as house and jungle – in Manchester. Now running the amazing Community parties and record stalls, he’s sharing his love and wisdom across generations. Garnering support from the likes of Honey Dijon, Laurent Garnier, Henry Wu, Marcellus Pittman and Motor City Drum Ensemble, check out ’20 Years of Rainy City Music: 1996 to 2016′ on Spotify here: https://open.spotify.com/album/42pNrQGGqwdD7oJBol44u8
