Verse Is Free

December 10 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

“A good poem is a contribution to reality. The world is never the same once a good poem has been added to it. A good poem helps to change the shape of the universe, helps to extend everyone’s knowledge of themselves and the world around them.” —Dylan Thomas
We should all try to read and write a bit of poetry; or we might never know how much we have to learn about the world, nor how much we have to say to it. Reading poetry reveals new truths about the world around you, and writing poetry creates them. All of us with something to say are poets! This workshop is for inexperienced and experienced poets alike. It is designed to get people to think creatively about how to read and write poetry, looking at poems and poets from a range of cultures, eras and backgrounds. If you feel like you think like a poet, but don’t know where to start with writing, hopefully this workshop will help inspire. Or if you just want to be introduced to some great poets to read, it should definitely help with that. We will try our hand at writing some poetry during the workshop, too, so if you are able to bring a pen and a notebook that would be great. I will provide enough materials however so don’t worry about it too much.
Hopefully, this will give people a few tools with which to better understand and create poetry in their own lives. Verse is free – it should be a thing that belongs to everyone to understand and enjoy.
