Partisan’s Public Mural Project

Open Call!

Are you a visual artist based in Salford or Manchester? Are you interested in learning how to transfer your art to a roller shutter surface? Are you passionate about mural painting & public art?

Partisan Collective’s Public Mural Project will commission six Salford & Greater Manchester-based artists from visual disciplines to create artwork for the frontage of our new home! Apply within if you are a visual artist, graphic designer, illustrator, beginner mural painter or graffiti artist and want to learn this new format to enhance your skillset!

Each selected artist will receive a £200 commission fee and workshop facilitation by artist and illustrator Heather Chambers. All materials costs covered by Partisan. No previous mural painting experience is required.

About your facilitator & the workshop!
Heather Chambers is an illustrator, muralist and workshop facilitator from Stockport with previous commissions from Field Music, University of Sunderland and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, to name a few. Heather has a wide range of experience in facilitating workshops and is driven by working with communities. In Heather’s own words: “I’m a proud Mancunian and my working-class roots significantly inspire my practice.”

Heather’s workshop will teach you how to create a mural for a shutter, from design stages to application. The workshop will involve preparing your design for the shutter, adapting the designs to suit the surface and scale, and learning how to use spray paints for mural making. Heather will support you in each stage of the process.

About Partisan Collective
Partisan Collective aims to provide an inclusive, accessible, not-for-profit platform and space in Greater Manchester where our members meet, share, learn, create, perform and dance together. We used to be based in Cheetham Hill but have recently moved to Salford where we are working hard towards making our new space wheelchair accessible and re-opening this summer.

The Opportunity
WHAT IS IT?
We are looking for 6 Salford & Greater Manchester-based artists who will be commissioned to create a public artwork on our frontage. This artwork wall will be the face of the new Partisan space – we’re so excited for the outcome of this project!

The selected applicants will:
– Have a commissioned public artwork at Partisan Collective, visible from Oldfield Road
– Have their work promoted through Partisan’s social media channels
– Engage in facilitation and learn valuable new skills with an established artist, Heather Chambers
– Receive £200 commission fee

The size of the area you will be painting will be either:
140cm high x 516cm wide
140cm high x 448cm wide

The material we would like successful applicants to use is spray paint, as it works best on a shutter surface. All materials will be provided by Partisan Collective. We will work with the successful applicants to present the final work as part of an open day at our space, where we will invite the public to see the outcome of the project, see the space, enjoy some music, food & drink!
