Labour and Policing: Time for a Socialist Alternative?

10th October 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

“State ownership and control is not necessarily Socialism – if it were, then the Army, the Navy, the Police, the Judges, the Gaolers, the Informers, and the Hangmen, all would all be Socialist functionaries.” – James Connolly

In recent weeks we have seen some of the most radical policy announcements in Labour’s history, yet Labour’s position on policing remains disappointingly uncritical.

As socialists and anti-racists, how should we think about the police as an institution? And, with the Tories now outflanking Labour’s promise for more police – as they inevitably would – is it time for Labour to radically rethink its approach to law and order?

Join Manchester Momentum and Dr Patrick Williams, senior lecturer in criminology at MMU, to discuss these questions and more.
