(Club Space) Unspoken Native Histories is a work in progress from Siletz Tribal Member MahTas Ne aka Autumn DePoe-Hughes, who is also of Cheyenne and Ojibwe descent. This is an uncovering of Autumn’s family tribal histories and stories that were intentionally hidden through generations of Indian Boarding School attendance at racist institutions like Carlisle, the Christian Krehbiel farm, Haskell, and Genoa. Autumn grew up seeing photos of Native Americans in books, but had no knowledge they were her direct family members until a Lakota tribal member and teacher discovered her name at the local High School and started connecting her to her wider family and tribe through her school’s Natives program. After her naming ceremony, she was given the name “The One Woman Speaks” and therefore tasked with speaking about her tribe’s histories. (Warning of possible strong content including violence, sexual assault, and suicide).
